Community Service Project Grants to Support Literacy Education

An important goal of the Portland Reading Council is to promote literacy in our community. We fund projects throughout the year in local schools and community organizations.

Funded projects include: 

• Increasing number of Spanish library books in dual language program serving 300 students

• Supporting a K-8 school to start their first Oregon  Battle of the Books program          

                                                                                                                                                                      • Creating a lending library and sharing literacy activities with families at an apartment complex in Gresham                                                                                                                                                                                                                    • Donating books to a new lending library for Latino families at Alberta Rider Elem.                                                                                                                                                                      • Supporting local high school students who read books, wrote reviews, and donated the titles to Street Books, a bicycle-powered lending library for the homeless
